On 5th February, 2026 a one-day workshop on the topic 'The Role of Sanskrit Drama in the Modern Era' was organized by the department of Sanskrit of the college, under the chairmanship of Principal Dr. Poonam Mor. On this occasion, the Principal stated that Sanskrit drama holds an extremely glorious and important place in the Indian knowledge tradition. In ancient India, drama was not merely a means of entertainment, but also an effective medium for the dissemination of education, religion, philosophy and moral values. In Bharata Muni's Natyashastra, the drama is referred to as the Fifth Veda. This means that through drama, the profound elements of the Vedas and Shastras were conveyed to the common people in a simple and engaging manner. The program coordinator, Dr. Neelam Rani explained that the objective of Sanskrit drama in Sanskrit literature was public education and public welfare. Through the theory of Rasa, it vividly depicted various human emotions - love, compassion, heroism, humor, peace, etc. Great playwrights like Kalidasa, Bhasa, Shudraka and Bhavabhuti powerfully presented Indian culture, social ideals and human values through their plays. Plays like Abhigyanashakuntalam, Mrichchhakatikam and Uttararamacharitam are still considered invaluable texts of the Indian knowledge tradition.
A deep integration of religion and philosophy is evident in Sanskrit drama. Values such as the theory of Karma, adherence to Dharma, sacrifice, compassion and truth were effectively presented through dramatic dialogues and characters. This fostered the development of moral consciousness in society and provided direction for personality development. Thus, it can be said that Sanskrit drama has been a strong pillar of the Indian knowledge tradition. It has not only preserved cultural and intellectual traditions but also transmitted them from generation to generation. Even today, Sanskrit drama remains a vibrant symbol of Indian culture and knowledge tradition. Mrs. Ritu and Ms. Surbhi played a key role in making this program a success.
