The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a yearly ranking system for higher education institutions in India. The Ministry of Education (MoE) of the Government of India releases the rankings.
How it works
- The NIRF uses a methodology to rank institutions based on several parameters.
- The parameters include teaching, learning, resources, research, graduation outcomes, outreach, inclusivity, and perception.
- The parameters are grouped into five clusters, and each cluster is assigned a weight. The weight depends on the type of institution.
- The NIRF checks the data provided by institutions for inconsistencies. For example, if an institution claims that 80% of its students are from economically backward sections, the NIRF will check that data with the institution and other regulators.
What it ranks
- The NIRF ranks institutions in 11 different categories, including overall, university, colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy, law, medical, architecture, dental, and research.
When it was launched
- The NIRF was launched on September 29, 2015 by the Minister of Human Resource Development, which is now the Ministry of Education.
